In a rural courtyard on the yellow earth slope, three strangers arrive: boastful Li Jianguo, honest Wang Daqiang, and quiet Liu Jie. The landlord, Old Lady Wang, sets three rules for them. As the three families live together in the courtyard, they argue over the water tap, steal scallions, and fight over the clothesline. They take turns digging the toilet, fetch water together, and pool money for the New Year.
