In the final years of the Qing Dynasty, Liu Niang, a girl from a poor family, is sold by her parents for ten taels of silver to the Huang household to be wed in a ghost marriage. On her wedding night she is violated by Huang Da, then thrown into a well to drown and be buried alongside the dead. Ten years later she returns as a vengeful spirit: she seduces and brutally kills Huang Da, slays Old Master Huang with her own hands while leaving his wife alive, and kills the matron's son so that the mother may sink forever into the grief of losing a child. Her red bridal gown never fades, and her grudge never rests.
